About

Join the global movement to catalog our planet’s trees with unique IDs.

Discover OpenTreeID®

OpenTreeID® is a pioneering initiative aimed at the global identification and cataloging of trees. Our mission is to assign a unique, searchable ID to every tree, fostering conservation efforts, advancing scientific research. We bring transparency to reforestation projects, ensuring accountability and effective monitoring of tree-planting initiatives.

How it works

The science of identification — kept simple

OpenTreeID is built with a low entry barrier: data can be entered manually from anywhere in the world — no special equipment needed. For those who want to take it further, advanced tools such as automated tree recognition and seamless API‑based synchronization are supported.

Each tree is assigned a GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) and recorded in the open, lightweight OpenTreeFormat, ensuring information is easy to share, sync, and access globally.

The data hub — connecting services

The OpenTreeID® platform acts as a data hub, seamlessly linking different applications and services into one shared ecosystem. By using the open, lightweight OpenTreeFormat, it enables smooth synchronization of tree data via APIs — whether the source is manual entry, automated tree recognition, or third‑party systems.

This interoperability means data is no longer locked into a single platform. Instead, it can move freely between tools, projects, and organizations, fostering collaboration, reducing duplication, and ensuring that every contribution adds to a richer, more complete global dataset.‌
